黃石寨位于張家界國家森林公園的中部，海拔約1200米，寨頂面積達200多畝，是由無數懸崖峭壁共同托起的一塊雄偉、奇特而又美麗的臺地。從寨頂眺望四周，只見云漫萬塹，千峰攢聚，綠樹凌空，薄霧飄舞。黃石寨是張家界風景的精華，一位著名詩人這樣評價黃石寨：“五步稱奇，七步叫絕，十步之外，目瞪口呆。”
杉林幽徑
首先呈現在我們面前的是一排陡峭而又曲折的石級，隱隱約約躺在茂密寧靜的杉林里，那就是“杉林幽徑”。白古登黃石寨只有后山一條路，今天走的這條路，是十多年前人工開鑿的。從杉林幽徑上山，兩邊的風景，讓人目不暇接。
羅漢迎賓

大巖屋
離開“羅漢迎賓”，請繼續往上走。現在所在的地方是一座巖罩，它高約3米，長約20米，上面有一個2米多寬的巖石懸罩，它叫做“大巖屋”。這里既是游客們小憩的好地方，也是一處絕妙的觀景臺，往東可以看到花溪峪、種子園與鑼鼓塔一大片風光，其間重巒疊嶂，萬峰聳立，云霧繚繞，恍如仙境。

娛樂臺

后山門
現在來到后山門，它猶如一道石門，中間陡峭，兩邊狹窄，地勢十分險要。過去這里是登黃石寨的唯一通道。1995年3月，江x民就是從這里上下黃石寨的。上山途中，江在休息時興致勃勃地拉起二胡，為當地的土家族女歌手伴奏;登上寨頂后，又情不自禁地唱起京劇《智取威虎山》中的“打虎上山”唱段，與游客們同樂。

歡迎來到張家界，十分高興能同大家一齊游覽張家界最大的凌空觀景臺——黃石寨。人們常說“不到黃石寨，枉來張家界”，可見黃石寨是整個張家界風景的精華。一位著名詩人以前這樣評價黃石寨：“五步稱奇，七步叫絕，十步之外，目瞪口呆。”
下面就請大家跟隨我一齊沿著這條“杉林幽徑”來欣賞兩旁讓人目不瑕接的風景吧。這是一排排陡峭而又曲折的山路。自古登黃石寨只有后山一條路，這天我們走的這條路，是十多年以前人工開鑿的。
大家請注意聽，前面傳來了陣陣歌聲。這是悅耳動聽的土家山歌，前面便是土家姑娘的點歌臺。一個個衣著秀麗的土家姑娘正在載歌載舞地歡迎著各位來賓，她們優美的歌聲是否會喚起您對土家民風的無限向往呢?她們的熱情好客、淳樸善良是否帶給您一種從未有過的簡單和快樂?此時此刻，您是否感悟到張家界“山美、水美、人更美”的真諦呢?
大家請看右邊對面的山上，有一個約20米高的圓形石柱，上面有一塊長約3米、寬l.5米的石匣，在石匣上有一個石蓋，這石蓋一半兒凌空，一半兒蓋于匣上，周圍環繞著五棵翠綠的松柏。傳說張良曾將黃石公的三卷天書藏于匣內，后因戰事平息，張良又取出天書放置在其他地方，但是他卻忘記合上抽蓋，至今留下一只半掩半開的石匣。由于這石匣內曾藏過天書，因而被人譽稱為“天書寶匣”。
大家請看前方，兩山相擠，中間僅有一通道，其形如門，大有“一夫當關，萬夫莫開”的氣勢，那里就是“南天門”。
再請大家看這邊。
順著我手指的放向便是“定海神針”。它高大挺拔，巍然屹立，似乎在用強硬的身軀支撐著整座大山。“定海神針”與“金鞭巖”遙遙相對，構成了一幅十分壯觀的“天然壯景”。那前面這座孤立的柱峰又是什么景點呢?它拔地而起，直插云霄，高達300余米，這就是張家界有名的“南天一柱”了，因為它立在南天門下面而得名。“南天一柱”是整個“武陵源”風景的特寫，它拔地而起，上大下小。在它身上有一種歷經萬年滄桑卻仍然堅忍不拔的精神，是整個“武陵源”石英砂巖峰林地貌景觀的縮影，也是“張家界國際森林保護節”的節徽和標志。
說起石英砂巖峰林地貌，大家可能會奇怪，大自然為何會如此神奇?根據科學的論證，3億多年以前，那里以前是一片汪洋大海，大約1億年前左右，由于海浪的沖擊，石英砂巖在海底沉積了500多米厚。之后經新構造運動強烈抬升，那里成了陸地，地面抬升以后，在流水的深切作用下，一些細小的砂石被沖走，加上在重力的作用下，巖石崩塌，又被雨水，溪流慢慢的沖刷等綜合作用，使得五凌援地區在漫長的歲月中逐漸構成這中奇特的石英砂巖峰林地貌。
好了，此刻我要告訴大家我門已經順利的登上黃石寨的寨頂了，我帶大家來摘星臺來看看。站在臺上，使人油然產生“一覽眾山小”的感慨。個性是到了晚上，有一種與星星近在咫尺的感覺，似乎一伸手，就能將天空上的星星給“摘下來”。
眼前的這個人工景點就是“六奇閣”。“六奇”準確地說是指山奇、水奇、云奇、石奇、動物奇、植物奇。好了，我們的游覽也要結束了。歡迎大家再次光臨黃石寨。
